What to Do
“Be the change you want to see in the world.” - Mahatma Ghandi
The outpouring of support for Sean from our friends has been amazing. The purpose of this
page is to provide some guidance and suggestions as to how to proceed. Fighting “city
hall” can seem to be a daunting task, but the fact is there are many examples of
individuals and small groups making a difference with their activism.
Our strategy is to broadly disseminate our concerns about Sean and his care. Please contact
as many people as you are comfortable with, and communicate your feelings from your heart.
We believe when the message gets to the right people, they will make necessary changes to
correct the injustice.
This isn’t meant as a definitive guide as to what to do - it is definitely a work in
progress. We welcome any suggestions as to how to proceed. Each person’s contribution
is unique. Everyone has different talents, different knowledge, and different contacts. As
Teddy Roosevelt said, “do what you can, where you are, with what you have.”
If you’d like to help, here are some suggestions:
-
Read the various documents that tell Sean’s story and what is happening to his support services.
-
Speak out about the issue. On your blog, on Facebook, with your friends.
-
Write letters to the editor of newspapers and magazines. On the
Media Contacts page,
we’ve listed some local Denver media and some national media. But you may know
other publications (both paper and online), who may be interested.
-
Pressure local and national media to put attention on this issue. At a time when Federal
stimulus monies are being made available, those who most need care are being neglected.
It is a major issue. If you have a knack for public speaking, you might consider a radio
talk show or television interview.
-
Express your concern to the officials in charge. We’ve listed some of these on the
Contacts page. You don’t have to be adversarial -
most of them are just as concerned as you are about doing the right thing. They may not be
aware how these budget cuts are affecting people’s lives.
-
If you can, make a donation.
-
Link to this website from your own website, Facebook home page, or personal blog. There
are many ways to create awareness of this issue.
-
If you have any other suggestions as to how to get something done, please
contact us.
